About me

If you opened this page then you probably want to know who I am. Well, let's find out then.
My name is Vladislav Maksimov, I live in Russia, Novosibirsk. In the virtual world I stick to the nick name Duke GNUkem. In my spare time I'm learning web development, working on an NES game, studying Japanese and English languages and looking for an opportunity to build cringy 3D cartoons in Blender. I'm a little bit fond of open source software and free software. Believe it or not I'm a full time Linux Mint user! Previously I used Gentoo and it was fun for a while.
Also I like travelling to foreign countries. So far I've been to:
- Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
- Turkey 🇹🇷
- Egypt 🇪🇬
- Thailand 🇹ðŸ‡
- China 🇨🇳
- Japan 🇯🇵
Why Dick Kickem (domain) name?
It's actually Duke GNUkem! I'm a little bit fond of Duke Nukem video game (especially Duke Nukem 3D) and GNU licensed free software (a little bit, not full fanatic). So, naturally, I combined two sentences: Duke Nukem and GNU license name and got Duke GNUkem nickname. I was very proud of such creativity and felt like a genius. Well...until I started working on this website, then I felt stupid.
What's up with the design of this website? Spinning disc? are you serious?
I drew inspiration from old late 90s/early 2000s websites. I like them a lot, they feel unusual and fresh today. Also I had a low-poly, 256 color aesthetic of the PS1/Windows 98 games in mind. I wanted to build a website with a character or attitude if you will. The mere thought of using template with boring color schemes and no animations (that distract you from reading) made me sad. That was not good for my motivation. So I decided to do things my way and as a result I'm having a lot of fun working on this project. This fun brings me motivation to learn web development deeper and write more articles here. So the fun factor is very important to me. After all this website is not my full time job.
